Early discovery of the Ômicron variant helps in vaccine prevention and adaptation

In the search for more details about the new strain, the scientists focus on research into the action of vaccines, although there is still little information about this variant identified in South Africa. The objective is to find out if it can escape existing vaccines. While there is no certainty about the real danger, the warning is that immunization and prevention protocols must be maintained throughout the world.

One of the appeals of the World Health Organization (WHO) is to carry out more tests and genetic sequencing of new cases. In Brazil, vaccination has positive results, however, due to the lack of vaccination rates similar to those in our country, experts cannot predict how Ômicron will behave here.

The WHO classified the new strain as a “variant of concern” because more than 50 mutations in its structure have been identified. In this case, the immunizing agents make the antibodies able to identify and attack precisely that part of the virus, preventing its advance in the body.

Are vaccines still effective against Ômicron?

The expectation is that within two weeks scientists will have answers about the resistance of the variant to vaccines. However, if this occurs, manufacturers of RNA-based immunizations (such as Pfizer) can adapt the formulas and official approvals.

In addition, the warning for care continues, and it is important to highlight that the other variants continue to circulate, which makes it essential that the population continue to be vaccinated.
